Born on 29th August 1897 in Ipswich, the son of the late Thomas and Matilda Spurling of 489 Bramford Road, Ipswich (at the time this was in Bramford Parish) and brother to Henry.
He had enlisted around October 1914 age 17 and crossed to France on the 28th February 1915 to join his battalion.
Reported wounded in a Casualty List issued 28th April 1915 following the Battalion’s part in the Battle of St Julien (24th April – 4th May 1915) part of the Second Battle of Ypres.
He was renumbered with the rest of the Territorial Force in 1917 and later served in the 2nd Suffolk and the 1st Cambridgeshire Regiment. It was with the Cambs Regiment that he was again reported wounded in a Casualty List issued on the 10th May 1918.
He was disembodied (ie reverted to a part-time soldier) on the 19th April 1919 and in the 1921 Census he is back home with mother at 489 Bramford Road.
He married Emma E Harvey in 1925 and in 1939 the couple are living at 56 Wallace Road, Ipswich. Ernest is working as a steelworks labourer.
He died in 1944 and his address at the time was 57 Springfield Lane, Ipswich.
[It is possible he is meant to be the “T A Spurling” in the Edward Packard & Co Roll of Honour and his initials were put in error from those of another employee, Thomas Arthur Spurling, who was killed in action.]
