Bramford British Legion logo“A Smith” listed in the RBL Roll of Honour. This is probably Arthur Albert, who was born in Bramford in 1886 (a birth of Albert Arthur Smith is registered in the Bosmere Registration District in the last quarter of 1886). He seemed to have gone by “Arthur” for most of his life. He was the son of George and Alice Smith of The Street. In 1901 Arthur was age 14 and a Labourer in a Chemical Works. No “A Smith” appears on the Packard Roll of Service so assumed to be a Fisons employee. He married Undine Ellen Keeble in 1909 and they lived in Station Alley.

Undine died in 1919.
Albert A Smith, born 1888, is recorded as being a patient at St Audrey’s Hospital Melton in 1939. His occupation is given as a “Soldier”. He was married. If this was our Arthur, now aged 51, then the hospital record might have reflected his last career rather that the present.
The death of Albert Arthur Smith of The Street Bramford is recorded on the 24th January 1949 in Melton which would seem to confirm the 1939 entry.. Probate was awarded to Gladys Alice Ellen Gooding wife of John Lymer William Gooding. Gladys was the daughter of Albert and Undine – she was born in 1910.

A Pension Record card for 18841, Private Arthur Albert (or Albert Arthur) Smith of The Street Bramford confirms his service. Medal Records show that he served with the 1st Suffolk and entered France on the 22nd June 1915. A War Office report dated 3rd November 1916 lists him as wounded. He was discharged on 27th February 1919 and awarded a pension from 17th March 1919 – to be paid to his wife.
