Bramford British Legion logo“W Jolly” as listed. Probably Frederick William Jolly who was born in Pettaugh on the 29th December 1898 – the son of Frederick and Edith Jolly. In 1911 the family was living at Woodlands Farm, Tye Lane, Bramford. Frederick’s father, also Frederick, was a farmer.
Information about Frederick Jnr and his army career has been provided by his niece*.
Frederick Jnr was the younger of twins, but his brother died a few days later. Fred Jnr – who adopted his middle name shortened to “Willie” was advised to volunteer by a shopkeeper in Bramford, but no information has been found about when he did so. Given his age it would have probably been in 1917 when he had turned 18. He wrote home from Woolwich on the 26th June 1918 suggesting that he was still undergoing training then. No medal records have been found confirming that he did not serve abroad during the war but from his correspondence he did serve in Egypt after the war. The family had moved to Lonely Farm, Cratfield in 1918.
In 1939 Willie is living and working with his younger brother at Vale Farm, Middleton, Suffolk.
