Bramford Great War Project – Served and Survived

The following individuals have been identified as having been born, or having lived, in the village and served in the armed forces, war work or with the Voluntary Aid Detachment during the Great War. They have been found mainly through existing military records or by the fact that they were listed on a roll of service or similar document. One method used was to identify, from the 1911 census, men who would have been of military age during the period of the war. With these names, birth and residence details matches were sought in military records. In many cases there is definitive evidence of individual having served through surviving records as well as their names appearing on Rolls of Service or in newspaper reports. However, with others the evidence is more circumstantial, and we cannot be absolutely sure.

A search of British Red Cross records revealed those who served in the Voluntary Aid Detachment.

Three Rolls of Service or Honour are referred to in this list.

Firstly, the combined Memorial and Roll of Service for the employees of Edward Packard & Co (shown below) which included many residents of the parish but also men from the surrounding area.

Secondly, the Bramford School Roll of Honour, which currently only exists as a type-written transcription of the original. The whereabouts of the original, if it still exists, is unknown.

Finally, a more recent discovery in 2019 is the Bramford British Legion Roll of Honour shown below.
