On the opening day of the Battle of the Ancre the 7th Royal Fusiliers were in support of Hood and Hawke Battalions of 189th Brigade.  189th Brigade was part of 63rd (Royal Naval) Division which was tasked with attacking German trenches immediately north of the River Ancre facing the village of Beaucourt.  The leading battalions faced heavy machine gun fire but took the German front line and, later, Beaucourt Station.  George was killed in action at sometime during the fierce fighting that continued throughout the day and night of the 13th November.  He is buried at the Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont Hamel.
George was employed at the factory of Edward Packard & Co before the war.
