This appears to be Walter Albert Lockwood, sometimes just known as Albert – in 1901 the family are living in Wallace Road, Ipswich – but Walter is listed as Albert – probably to differentiate him from his father – also called Walter. Just to make things difficult there was an Albert Walter Lockwood, born 1890. By 1911 the family had moved to Paper Mill Lane – in one of the workers cottages near the factory as Walter Snr was employed as a “Chemical Works Labourer” – as he was in 1901.
Walter Albert Lockwood born 28th December 1898 (as recorded on the Death Index of the 3rd Quarter 1978) was the brother of Frederick and Henry George and Arthur Henry.
The three brothers Fred, Henry and Walter are more likely to be the three men on the School Roll and on the Packard Roll.
A Walter A Lockwood – born 22nd December 1899 appears on the 1939 Register living at 15 Works Lane with Walter (b 12/1/1872) and Ada b 10/7/1871) – his parents. Importantly the listing states that he was a “Disability pensioner, Army, 4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment”. The reason for the disparity in the date of birth is not known but close enough to allow for errors in reporting or recording. The birth of Walter Albert Lockwood is recorded in the 1st Quarter of 1899 in the Bosmere Registration District confirming that he must have been born in 1898. He is listed as being married but no wife was present at this address. Against his entry is the information that he was “Disability Pensioner Army 4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment”.
Records show that Walter married Mildred Gant in Ipswich in 1933. A further search of the 1939 Register shows Mildred living with relatives at 23 Westbourne Road, Ipswich and listed as “Incapacitated – Domestic duties”. She died in 1942. There was a probable marriage to Lily May Sherman in 1943 in Ipswich. She was born in 1903 in Ipswich and died in 2001. The death of Walter Albert Lockwood is recorded in Ipswich in 1978.
As our Walter is recorded in 1939 as being an army pensioner it is likely that this was because of injury or illness during his service. However, no corresponding Silver War Badge or Pension record has been found for this man.
