Petty Officer First Class Richard Sanderson

Petty Officer First Class Richard Sanderson Royal Navy

Richard was a career sailor from the age of 16 in 1893 until he was discharged, time served, in 1905 to the Royal Fleet Reserve. During his pre-war service he was on HMS Barfleur during the “Boxer Rebellion” in China – he had served alongside Joseph Benjamin Bowman – another Bramford man from the Bowman’s Bakery family.

On the outbreak of war Richard was called up from the Reserve in an essentially shore based role with the Grand Fleet but discharged after two years due to ill health. Before the war he had taken up residence in Bramford at 6 Paper Mill Lane and had worked at Joseph Fison’s factory as a rope splicer.

He died from tuberculosis on the 3rd February 1917 and was buried in the Ipswich Cemetery, War Graves Section.
