“T Scopes” as listed by the British Legion. Thomas Scopes was born in Bramford, in 1883, and was the brother of Harry. His year of birth varies from 1883 to 1885 according to which census you read but a birth was registered in the Bosmere District in 1883. The 1939 Register entry gives his date of birth as 5th June 1883.
In 1911 Thomas was living with his parents in Station Alley and he worked as a labourer at Packards factory (T. Scopes appears on their Roll of Service). He is also listed on the School Roll of Honour as serving in the 9th Suffolk.
There is no surviving service record but there is a medal index card to Thomas Henry Scopes. He was originally in the Suffolk as Private No 17133 and this number is close to other Bramford men who joined the 9th Battalion (see George Smith 17131, George Lewis 17130 and Albert Lockwood 17136). He first served in France on 30th August 1915 when the 9th Suffolk first entered the Western Front.
A War Office list of 17th August 1917 reports his entitlement to wear a wound stripe while serving with the Suffolk Regiment and the wound no doubt accounts for his eventual transfer to the Labour Corps.
In 1939 he is living in The Street and working as a bricklayers labourer.
The death of Thomas H Scopes is recorded in Ipswich in 1941 aged 58.
